Arkema and Semcorp Forge Strategic Partnership to Advance High-Performance Battery Separators

Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, and Semcorp, a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion battery separators, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating innovation in battery separator technologies and expanding Semcorp’s presence in international markets.

Through this collaboration, Arkema will provide high value-added solutions and technical expertise to support the deployment of Semcorp’s high-performance separators across key global industries, including electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESS), and consumer electronics. Both companies will also engage in joint R&D initiatives to develop next-generation separators, combining their strengths to enhance battery performance, safety, and longevity.

Battery separators are essential components in lithium-ion batteries, preventing short circuits between the anode and cathode while enabling efficient ionic transport. Their design and material properties directly influence battery efficiency, thermal stability, lifespan, and safety, which are critical for clean transportation and renewable energy storage.

With decades of expertise in advanced materials, Arkema has long supplied high-performance solutions to the battery industry. Its separator portfolio, including Kynar® PVDF and Incellion™ acrylic-based materials, meets the growing demand for safer, more efficient, and durable lithium-ion batteries, supporting the global transition to sustainable energy and electric mobility.

Semcorp, headquartered in China and serving major battery manufacturers worldwide, aims to leverage this strategic partnership to accelerate the development of cutting-edge separators crucial for the safety and reliability of next-generation battery systems.

“Building on Arkema’s legacy of innovation in advanced materials for battery technologies, our collaboration with Semcorp is a pivotal step in driving technological breakthroughs and maintaining industry leadership,” said Thierry Le Hénaff, Chairman and CEO of Arkema.

Tony Xiaohua Li, CEO of Semcorp, added, “Partnering with Arkema enhances our expertise in separator manufacturing. Arkema’s high-end material technologies, particularly Kynar® PVDF, complement our specialization, enabling faster development of high-performance separators and their expansion into global markets. This collaboration will accelerate the evolution of safer, more efficient battery systems, supporting the global shift toward clean energy and electric mobility.”

This MoU marks a significant milestone in strengthening the global battery ecosystem, reflecting both Arkema and Semcorp’s commitment to delivering innovative, safe, and sustainable energy solutions through advanced materials.
